Located in Conkles Hollow State Nature Preserve, this hike begins with a steep climb to the top of the gorge where the views are excellent. It follows the rim along rock outcroppings making a loop around the interesting sandstone gorge. Birdwatching and spring wildflowers are popular.

Located in the Oglebay Park, this trail begins at the Schrader center building. It has been made from 97 percent recycled materials, including newspapers, tires, bottles and aluminum cans. The trails are open dawn until dusk, if you plan ahead there is a chance to join one of the programmed activities from the institute. Just off the beginning of the trail is a 120 foot long elevated forest canopy walkway which is a great place to watch migrating Warblers in May. A butterfly garden with Iron gates is toward the South side of the trail as well as an interpretive station to help hikers appreciate the surroundings. The Hardwood Ridge Trail travels along a moderate downhill mulch and dirt trail through a hardwood, hemlock and rhododendrons forest. There are many side trails that lead to overlooks along the hike. At the end of the trail is an overlook of a small waterfall.
