The Coalwood Recreational Trail is located 8 miles south of Munising and the Lake Superior shoreline and travels through secluded and peaceful wooded terrain in the Hiawatha National Forest. The trail is a ballast surface and is mostly used for horseback riding, snowmobiling, and mountain biking. There are multiple access points to the trail but parking can be limited. The trail also connects to the Haywire trail which is popular for hiking and biking, providing mountain bikers with additional riding options.

Located just over 15 miles south of Munising in the Hiawatha National Forest, this long scenic ride travels through heavily wooded terrain passing multiple small lakes along the way. The trail consists of mostly rolling singletrack trail with a short section of doubletrack at the beginning and end. There are lots of small ups and downs but no major climbs or descents. The trails are also popular for equestrian riding and hiking so watch out for others while riding. There are multiple connecting trails within the main loop that can be used to customize a shorter ride if desired.

Located in the scenic and remote Hiawatha National Forest, this short loop trail circles around the 145-acre Colwell Lake providing hikers with nice water views and lots of opportunity for viewing wildlife. The natural surface trail is wide and easy to follow with minimal change in elevation making it a great choice for hikers of all skill levels. There are campgrounds and picnic areas located on the lake as well as a boat launch and nice swimming beaches. The trail is also used a lot in the winter for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

This out-and-back trail leads to a scenic waterfall located in the remote wilderness area of Hiawatha National Forest. The trail begins by following an old jeep road to the valley floor where a spur trail takes off and leads to the falls. The trail runs through heavily wooded terrain that provides a lot of solitude and opportunity for viewing wildlife. The trail is not very long but there are a few sections that may require walking through wet spots or water as it nears the falls.

This loop hike explores a large section of Grand Island, an off-shore island located in Lake Superior just north of Munising. The hike starts from the boat landing and goes clockwise to complete a loop that covers the southern portion of the west half of the island. Scenery along the way includes cliff-top views of the lake and Pictured Rocks cliffs as well as lots of hiking through heavily wooded terrain that is home to a variety of wildlife. The island is accessible by a passenger ferry that typically runs between the months of May to October but check current schedules to ensure the ferry is running. The island is known for an abundance of bugs during some of the summer months so come prepared with lots of bug repellant.
