This ride begins with some stiff climbing that is reasonably technical with its fair share of roots and rocks. The ride takes place in dense hardwood and coniferous forest and in several places, particularly near Black Cap has some good views. At a little after three miles and about seventeen hundred feet gained it all pays off with three miles of twisting downhill. You even get to enjoy downhill grades on the asphalt while coasting back to your car.

This trail begins with a short bit of rolling terrain and then has a steep, sustained climb for a half of a mile. From here it’s nearly three miles of twisty downhill through dense woodlands. Eventually you’ll pass a water tank signaling you’re about to spit out onto Hurricane Mountain Road; from here you ride back up the road to your vehicle or drive back if you had the foresight to leave a shuttle car.

This loop offers a good mix of single and doubletrack on some reasonably technical, occasionally rocky, root-covered trail. The ride begins with a mile or so of coasting and flat ground but then a climb and downhill ordeal over five miles long with some good views of the surrounding countryside begins. After a long coast you get couple of miles of rolling terrain, plank riding and bridges before a short climb out.

Hard

This long outing is best enjoyed on a hardtail mountain bike or cyclo-cross bike but is rated as though it’s a road ride. This trail offers mile after mile of rough country road (Dolly Copp Road) and repurposed rail grade taking you from the White Mountain Road all the way to the wetlands of Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge. If supplies are needed on the journey look for Lowes Path at about trail mile 8.9, if you turn right on Lowes path it will take you to the highway and a country store a few hundred feet east and on the other side of the road. This trail may best be enjoyed as a one-way adventure with a shuttle vehicle parked at Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge. Bring plenty of food and water and appropriate clothing for a long ride. The Dolly Copp Road is closed in winter months.

This ride, a mix of single and doubletrack starts right out of the gate with a burly climb, probably a bit of pushing and hike-a-bike but then after a couple miles of sacrifice you’re paid off with over two miles of downhill. The trail bottoms out near the highway, rolls on asphalt for a bit while making another, smaller climb for a couple of miles before finishing with some rolling downhill. This ride perhaps best enjoyed with a shuttle vehicle parked at the Livermore Road Trailhead.

This well maintained track climbs through hardwood and coniferous forest in Moose Brook State Park; Moose Brook is the former site of a Civilian Conservation Corps camp and the trails built by the workers there are of excellent quality. The summit of the ride is where the single track meets Berry Farm Road so it’s best just to turn around and enjoy the downhill. This trail is located in Moose Brook State Park so entrance fees apply.

This ride offers a good tour of an area with a good handful of side loops and connectors that can provide a fair amount of riding. After paying the entrance fee at Echo Lake State Park you start a root-covered loop around the lake but break away on a trail that dumps you on asphalt by the entrance of a resort. You dive back into the woods and shortly are spit out on the Cathedral Ledge Access Road for a steep climb that takes you to Red’s Trail that can be looped back into the road.

This is a bruiser of a climb. The Mt Washington Auto Road ascends nearly a mile into the sky in a little less than eight miles. The payoff however is fantastic as the summit of this spin is the highest point in New England and offers incredible three hundred sixty degree views of the surrounding White Mountains. The Mt Washington Auto Road is a toll road and a parking permit is required in the White Mountain National Forest.
