Clinton Lake is surrounded by more than 60 miles of hiking trails that pass through scenic woodlands, prairies, and over ridges along the lakeshore. The main trunk of the trail system is on the north shore of the lake and is blazed in blue and white. This route begins on the white-blazed trail and then makes a small loop through the woods on a red-blazed trail before following the blue-blazed trail back to the start. The red section of this route is meant to challenge mountain bikers as it is a very narrow trail. There is little room for your bike tire on the trail and the thick woods leave little room for anything else. The white trail includes several ups and downs. There are great views of the lake and beautiful scenery through the woods.

Settlers named this region of steep, grassy hills and bluffs the Smoky Hills because of the haze that seems to settle on them at sunrise and sunset. This loop in west-central Kansas crosses the Smoky Hill River Valley in a region where mixed-grass prairie begins giving way to the short-grass prairie which is able to endure the hot, arid summers of the western High Plains. The route takes you by two crossings of the frontier Butterfield Overland Dispatch freight and passenger wagon trail and Cedar Bluff Reservoir. US-283 has a paved shoulder and the other highways do not but they have very low traffic.

Emporia State University has some of the finest mountain biking trails in the state. This trail has some nice open riding as well as some technical challenges. There are really pleasant terrain and scenery changes on this route that make it a great ride. You will follow an old road before entering the woods along the river. A high bank turn, some jumps, and sharp turns add to some of the excitement. A concrete forest allows you to tune your technical skills and another wooded section with several short climbs and descents varies the terrain. Many riders find this trail very enjoyable because of the variance in challenges as well as open areas that allow you to really pick up speed.

The Kansas River, also known as the Kaw River, flows past the majestic Flint Hills, across wide plains, and into the limestone hills of eastern Kansas. The entire river is rated as Class I difficulty. It is a shallow, sandy-bottomed river with many big sandbars and islands, wild beauty, and gentle nature. Wildlife is plentiful and many native bird species can be spotted on the river banks. This trip from DeSoto to Wilder Road will take you through almost every kind of habitat you will find on the Kansas River in a span of only a few miles. Already confined between hills, the channel grows narrower and the river makes a final charge over a limestone riverbed then into a long, steep-sided pool. There are intermediate access points along the way to shorten it up.

This trail is located just a few miles north of Fall River Lake and roughly parallels the Badger Creek. You will ride up along the edge of the open tallgrass prairie and then enter the dense woods. As you ride the hillside along Badger Creek you will bear right at the fork and the trail winds further up the hill. The trail is mostly dirt, rocks, and roots and includes some nice technical challenges. Some of these challenges are flat rocks, creek crossings, fast downhills, rugged rocks and difficult creek beds. Large boulders and beautiful forest make great scenery and there are some fantastic views as well.

The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is another point of interest with its impressive limestone mansion. There are no paved shoulders on this road but traffic is light. Otter Creek can be difficult to find with enough water in it but if you do it will be one of the most enjoyable creek runs in the area. With a narrow channel, riffles, gravel bars, and rocky ledges, this creek can be both challenging and a job. Novice paddlers are cautioned to attempt this run only at low water levels. Trees often arch over the creek, making it seem like a tunnel of green foliage, rock, and water but also cause strainers in some places. At other times, the channel is wide and deep but you are never far from the next riffle. The lowest recommended flow is 50-80 CFS but it may still be a little scratchy. Higher levels create more difficult riffles.

Mushroom Rock State Park is the smallest of the Kansas State Parks and will likely take you longer to reach than to explore. But the towering sandstone formations resembling giant mushrooms are a geological phenomenon that are worth the trip. These formations are the remains of beach sands and sediments of the Cretaceous Period, the interval of geologic time from about 144 to 66 million years ago. Sandstone and sedimentary rock is held together by natural cement. The concretions that make up Mushroom Rocks are cemented calcium carbonate. The largest rock measures 27 feet in diameter. It is said that Native Americans and settlers used the historic landmarks as a meeting place.

The water is very clear on this short float through Shawnee Mission Park. At levels below 25 CFS this section is not passable and approaching 50-100 CFS the riffles become more passable. The best paddling results are found at about 100-150 CFS. Sharp turns are punctuated by whitewater drops with even better surf below the ledges. The Glacial Hills Scenic Byway runs north from Leavenworth to White Cloud on the K-7 Highway, paralleling the Missouri River and passing through an area of steep hills carved out by glaciers millions of years ago. This route is also part of the Lewis and Clark Trail, which follows the footsteps of explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark on their Journey of Discovery. Atchison was the birthplace of Amelia Earhart and is also home to the impressive St. Benedict's Abbey and Benedictine College. The highway does not have paved shoulders but traffic is manageable.

The Waka Wave is a park-and-play spot and is located less than half a mile downstream of the Clinton Lake Dam. Here, the Wakarusa River drops over a five-foot high rock ledge, creating the Waka Wave. This is a very popular spot for boaters for hundreds of miles around. At the recommended water level (1,000 CFS), this is a Class III play-spot. Above 1,000 CFS the wave starts to wash out, as the flow drops below 850 CFS, the hydraulic gradually becomes more intense, at 700 CFS the spot is really sticky, and between 500 and 600 CFS the wave is extremely dangerous. For best results, water levels should be between 850-1,000 CFS. Water conditions change rapidly below the dam. The Waka Wave can be accessed from the Outlet Park area.
